SPRINGFIELD, Mo — Keep it closed – that’s the message Greene County Sheriff’s deputies are sending to homeowners.

Burglars are targeting open garage doors to take whatever they want, and police say the warm weather helps the crooks.

Cops say people everywhere are leaving their garages open and crooks are taking advantage of it.

Sheriff’s deputies say burglars broke into as many as five homes in southwest Springfield just in this past month.

And they think open garage doors had a lot to do with it; people leave valuable items in there that are easy to carry and roll off with.

“Especially in the vehicles themselves,” Lt. Christian Conrad tells KSPR News. “Laptop computers, and one of the more dangerous things people don’t stop and consider: with conceal and carry a big issue right now, a lot of people are arming themselves and carrying their weapons inside their vehicle and they simply forget the weapon is in there.”

Conrad says many of the burglaries take place during the daytime when people aren’t home – or are out back doing yardwork.
